KBUZ was a 100,000-watt FM blowtorch that covered South Central Kansas from a wee little studio in a rural Cowley County industrial park. The station was a regional favorite through the 1980s, starting out with a wide open programming format of popular music, later transitioning to a Black music format, making it for several years one of the most powerful dedicated broadcasters of soul, R&B and hip-hop music between Chicago and Dallas.
The station was also famous for playing two entire vinyl albums back-to-back every night of the week, and even publishing a calendar of the selections ahead of time — a great boon to us poor adolescents who couldn't always afford the albums but stocked up on blank TDK SA-90 cassettes. Locals carried the KBUZ "Fantastic Plastic Card" for discounts at many area retailers, too — and they were just about exactly the same color as this commemorative tee!
