In the '70s black velvet paintings, generally fitted out in chunky wooden frames, were sold out of vans set up in parking lots all over the U.S. The subject matter ranged from religious figures such as Jesus and the Virgin of Guadalupe to wild animals such as tigers and eagles to Latin motifs like toreadors and bailaores flamencos — but most memorable among them tended to be the renditions of movie and music stars like John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe and of course, Elvis Presley.
Although many of these one-off paintings were signed "Ortiz," reputedly from the studio of an artist named David Ortiz, the truth is that the majority were produced in huge quantities by assembly lines of skilled craftspeople in artsy boiler rooms south of the border. The design reproduced here is such an Ortiz, likely originating from around 1977, when Elvis passed unexpectedly at age 42.
